Culture in Vyškov
In 1885, the Contribution Savings Bank, later the First Contribution Savings Bank, decided to build a new large building on the square for its growing agenda. The building was built from the beginning with the intention of supporting social and cultural life in the city. The savings bank became a patron of schools. It was also a sponsor of Czech cultural facilities. Social and cultural life, led by the Haná Readers', Singing and Theatre Society and the Vlasta Society, was concentrated within the walls of this, by the standards of that time, large and unique building. This building housed the first Sokol gym. Other societies such as the photo club, singing ensembles and most other societies and clubs established in the following century also found facilities here. The building was perfectly adapted for holding concerts, theatres and balls, but also for holding lectures and meetings. The main premises of the house were entrusted to the use of the Haná Society, which managed the rentals to other interested parties.
Even after the building was completed and in fact throughout the entire period of the First Republic, the savings bank itself was actively involved in the financial support of Czech association life in the city. From its independence as the First Contribution Savings Bank in 1920 to 1935, it donated over two million crowns to association purposes, and also provided associations with cheap loans and advertising. The chief treasurers of the associations came from among the savings bank employees, who were also very adept at managing and controlling the flow of finances.
The Besední dům became the true center of the city and its size provided almost unlimited possibilities. All association life and then, in the 20th century, all social life of civil associations and clubs took place here. As a center of events, the importance of this building never wanes, even after the completion of the falconry and various schools. This building also survived the war without much damage and was not even fundamentally affected by modernization in the spirit of socialist realism. Since 1945, it has again fully served all interested parties and has been serving continuously to this day.
In Vyškov you can of course also go to the cinema. The Sokolský dům cinema, founded by the Vyškov Municipal Cultural Centre, can be found in the city centre on Tyršova Street. In 2011, the cinema was equipped with modern digital projection technology in the international DCI (Digital Cinema Initiatives) standard and subsequently expanded with Dolby 3D technology. The cinema hall has a capacity of 236 seats.
